The Warflat was a development of the London & North Western Railway's 1917 design for their 40 Ton 'Parrot' bogie trolley - a number of which were built for the War Office for use during the First World War. During the Second World War it was found that a heavier duty wagon was required for carrying the now larger tanks and other equipment.
It is believed that up to 525 wagons were built to this later design and following WW2 many were sold to British Railways.
